What Is Oral Conscious Sedation?

Oral conscious sedation is one of the most popular types of sedation dentistry, mainly because it doesn’t require needles or a face mask. Before coming into the office, your child will need to take the oral sedative at least an hour prior to their appointment. Once you get to us, your child should feel calm and ready for care.

It’s a great option for kids because it helps alleviate any dental anxiety they may have, allowing them to be relaxed and comfortable for their treatment. The effects are long-lasting and might even cause your child to fall into a light sleep during their procedure.

How Does Oral Conscious Sedation Work?

Keep in mind that oral conscious sedation isn’t designed to put your child to sleep entirely. Instead, they’ll feel deeply relaxed. Some patients aren’t even able to recall their appointments after the sedative wears off, which can be a benefit.

Although the effects linger throughout the entire appointment, your little one will still be able to communicate with our dentists if needed. We’ll monitor them during the procedure to ensure there are no complications. Your child should wait until the sedative has completely worn off (about 24 hours) before returning to their usual routine, like school.
